Working as personal chef to the German Ambassador in London was an incredible opportunity, but it certainly had its share of challenges, the demanding environment and rigorous recruitment process, I quickly established myself as a very good French Chef. Hermann von Richthofen was the ambassador, he was a great nephew of Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron".
One particular incident stands out in my memory. The young daughter of the German ambassador, curious about the culinary world, expressed a desire to observe and learn French cooking with myself. I happily agreed, envisioning a delightful mentorship experience. However, upon her arrival, I was met with an unexpected surprise.
The young girl had not only forgotten to wear shoes but had also brought her dog along. Safety being a paramount concern in a professional kitchen, I gently explained the importance of wearing shoes to prevent accidents and the strict prohibition of animals. To my dismay, the girl was insistent despite my warnings. In a moment of frustration, I raised my voice and firmly instructed her to leave the kitchen, both her and her dog. I said “You and the dog, OUT!”.
The incident caused a stir among the embassy staff. Some were concerned about my job security, believing that my outburst would lead to disciplinary action. However, the following morning, I was summoned to a meeting with the ambassador's wife. To my surprise, instead of reprimanding me, she expressed her gratitude.
The ambassador's wife explained that she was impressed by my commitment to safety and professionalism. She acknowledged that her daughter had become accustomed to getting her way and that my firm stance had finally instilled a sense of discipline. This unexpected show of support not only relieved my anxiety but also highlighted the importance of maintaining a safe and orderly working environment.
This was just one of many adventures and misadventures I experienced during my time at the German Embassy. I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I enjoyed sharing it. Stay tuned for more Chef Eric's Tips & Stories !
